Engineering Service Examination

  • Engineering Service examination, is conducted by UPSC once in a year, primarily constitutes of Engineers who work for or under Government of India. The task of those selected for Engineering Service is to manage a large segment of Public sector economy which comprises of Railroads, Public works, Power, Telecommunications etc. The recruitment of selected candidates are made in the following categories:

Category I: Civil Engineering (Group A Services / Posts)

  1. Indian Railway Service of Engineers
  2. Indian Railway Stores Service
  3. Central Engineering Service
  4. Military Engineer Service (Building and Roads Cadre)
  5. Central Water Engineering
  6. Assistant Executive Engineer
  7. Survey of India Service

Category II: Mechanical Engineering (Group A & B Services / Posts)

  1. Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers
  2. Indian Railway Stores Service
  3. Central Water Engineering Service
  4. Indian Ordnance Factories Service
  5. Indian Naval Armament Service
  6. Assistant Executive Engineer (In Ministry of Defence)
  7. Assistant Naval Store officer Grade I in Indian Navy
  8. Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service
  9. Assistant Executive Engineer (in Boarder Roads Engineering Service)
  10. Mechanical Engineer (in Geological Survey of India)

Category III: Electrical engineering (Group A & B Services/ Posts)

  1. Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers.
  2. Indian Railway Stores Service
  3. Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service
  4. Indian Naval Armament Service
  5. Military Engineer Service
  6. Assistant Executive Engineer (In Ministry of Defence)
  7. Assistant Naval Store (In Indian Navy)

Category IV: Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering (Group A & B Services / Posts)

  1. Indian Railway service of signal engineers
  2. Indian Railway stores service
  3. Indian Ordnance factories service
  4. Indian Naval Armament service
  5. Assistant Executive Engineer (In Ministry of Defence)
  6. Engineer in Wireless planning and coordination wing/monitoring organisation
  7. Assistant Naval Stores officer (in Indian Navy)
  8. Survey of India Service

 

  • Educational qualification: A degree in Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent.M. Sc degree or its equivalent with Wireless communications, Electronics, Radio physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects also acceptable for certain services/ Posts only.

Age Limit: 21 to 30 years of age, relaxation of 3 years to OBC ad 5 years to SC/ST category candidates.

Attempts:   For General Category – 4 attempts

For OBC Category – 7 attempts

For SC/ST Category – No Limit

How to Apply: The candidates have to visit the UPSC official website and go to UPSC online application link and click on the form then the candidate needs to fill all the information asked in the form.

Examination Fee: The fee for application form for the General category and OBC category student is Rs. 200 Whereas, Candidates of SC, ST, PH, female are exempted from paying the application fee.

            Selection Procedure for Engineering Service Examination

The selection procedure for Engineering Service Examination is not very rigorous and it only involves two steps, the first step is the written examination and the second step is Personality Test of the shortlisted candidates.

Scheme of Examination:

Written  Examination (1000 Marks)

Paper I (Objective Type): General Ability test – 200 Marks

Paper II and III (Objective Type): Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics and             Telecommunication Engineering -200 Marks for Each Paper

Paper IV and V (Conventional Type): Civil / Mechanical / Electrical / Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering – 200 Marks for Each Paper.

Personality Test (200 Marks)
